Scratches

They say when you put two mudpuppies
In a pail together they'll fight to the death
Like two cats tied at the tail
When we moved in together
I felt the pail close around us
And I watched as though I wasn't inside
As though I wasn't there
At first I thought my life would sit
outside the walls
Making room for you
And find the cracks to seep into
But our tails were tied
And when I pulled you pulled I pulled
And we'd go to bed at night
Covered with scratches
Sometimes I feel the string
Digging into my tail
As though it were still there
As though it were there
And I want to scratch you
Until you don't pull me anymore
Just so we can finally go to bed again
But when I scratch you're not there
You're not there
I'm alone in the pail
And I've seeped into all the cracks
I keep biting and scratching
Biting scratching at nothing
Hoping you'll be there when I open my eyes
When I open my eyes
Sometimes I feel the string
Digging into my tail
As though it were still there
As though it were there
And I want to scratch you
Until you don't pull me anymore
Just so we can finally go to bed again
Just so we, just so we can
Go to bed again

Sleeping Dragon
05:02
|
|
||
"I see how this game is played,"
Said the crafty knight to the captive maid
"The dragon sleeps today,
I crept by as he lay
I've got a planting field with ox and till
And a cottage upon the hill to fill
I'll take you to see them
If you'll grant me your freedom"
And she said, "What about the poems I sing
The harp I play, and the joy I bring"
He said, "Plenty of room for all you have
In the place I saved for my better half"
But the valiant knight lost his valiance
Traded it for the lesser talents
Of keeping the cottage ruly and neat
And keeping quiet the little feet
The harp stay hidden and poems unsung
Little was heard from the maid's tongue
And though fields were tilled and cottage filled
There was little joy upon the hill
Until one day the dragon returned
And with a stout breath the cottage he burned
Little feet were silenced, and knight was no more
The dragon stood tall, the maid before
"We meet again, Serpent-Beast,"
The maid said without fear in the least
The dragon replied in a hearty bellow,
"You're to be a delicious feast"
"Why would you wish to eat me," she cried,
"I haven't the salt of a knight's pride
You once caught me to sing, my freedom it cost
I would sing for you now
But my voice is lost"
Said the dragon, "Your husband chose the fate I bring
Before were silenced the poems you sing
If true were the valor of your late betrothed
Alive would tomorrow see you both"
And with one gulp he swallowed her down
Complete with socks and nighting-gown
And with her last breath, said the maid,
"I see how this game is played"

I Can't Do That
04:50
|
|
||
It doesn't take a rocket scientist
To see that this isn't going anywhere
It's no good to look at me like I look at you
Like you look at something to wear
This morning I'll wake up and see you there
But I'll be looking from far away
And at the breakfast table I'll say something like
What do you think the weather'll do today
So don't look at me with the puppy-eye gaze
Like I'm at the pet store, starting to bend
'Cause I might just want to take you home
And put that same old leash on you again
And I can't do that
No I can't do that
I can't
Who was it that started talking again
I didn't think we'd be here again
And now here I am, opening up for you to see
That there's still a hole shaped like you in me
So I'm gonna wait in the coffeeshop 'til you get here
And I'm gonna say something like
I like to have you near
It's all gonna be fresh and new and good to the taste
But then I'll put you back in that same old place
And I can't do that
No I can't do that
I can't

The Regretful Man
05:45
|
|
||
I went looking through the streets
Sifting through the fluorescent night
Didn't find what I was looking for
Didn't stop me from walking 'til daylight
The streetlights always stay on until dawn
My eyes stay open until the image is gone
Concrete mirrors our slow decay
Our shoes are slowly wearing you away
Looking back is a sharp attack these days
Regret has drawn the lines upon my face
It's harder to look ahead than stare at the ground
But you'll never heal unless you leave this town
The nightmare is here
The dream is past the bend
And you need a few stitches before you can mend
Some really black clouds are floating in the West
Change is aloft
It's dark, this place is dying
Like someone turned it off
I've seen my transformation from where I stand
The sad little boy became the regretful man
The journey is as far as the shadow of my doubt
No matter the direction
Anywhere else is out
Looking back is a sharp attack these days
Regret has drawn the lines upon my face
A retrospective intellect will always be alone
Spiraling in would have, should have known

Not Ever
04:15
|
|

Inside the garden did we dwell
Amongst the cotton trees
And inside the garden did we smell
The cotton breeze
Now one day the apple did we eat
From the tree of blood
And of the body did we seed
From the tree of blood
In a place we know from dreams
Now outside the garden do we dwell
Amongst the willow trees
And outside the garden do we smell
The willow breeze
And do we seek forever
Do we remember
Not ever

Picturesque

These lemons and us
Not getting any younger
Lit the fire beneath our feet
Nothing ups the stakes
Like a rise in temperature
You sidled up a sideways glance
Trying to balance courage and panic
'I think Dodge wants us out'
And I said sure
There must be more
But I've seen the shore
I've taken the bus to New York
There must be more
Or else what's it for
And I've been in love before
Along the way we cling like trauma
Snagged here
That's okay
A little blood
And we're on our way
Your dream feels like comfort
Even when I wake up and you're not there
When we were us
Two legs could walk
But what about the weight we have to bear
I thought we'd hold on tight
And squeeze into a focused point of view
I guess that's what I needed to think
Now I think
In fact you always knew
Tightly wound
The motion wears a wound
Where we once touched
But with balm on hand
We're here for us
Night and day
If it's all a painting
I want a palette in subtle shades of sad
If it's about having
I'd rather remember all the things that I had
Your dream feels like comfort
Even when I wake up and you're not there
When we were us
Two legs could walk
But what about the weight we have to bear
Dropped the bluffs
Never meant to win
Signed on for the rags
But found myself richer
Our game was rained out but
Doesn't matter
Picturesque
Isn't the big picture

Reeds
06:38
|
|
||
Inevitable unceasing storm
Bend or break true to form
You fail and fail, pressed down and down
Sight the throne lose the crown
After it's done, after you bleed
Say 'tis better bend like the reed
Better to break than shut your eyes
Never to dream better to die
After you fail, just 'fore the end
Say 'tis better, bend in the wind
But reeds do not
The heavens reach
Reeds do not
The heavens reach
